Who I Am
My name is Robert K. Lewis, and I have been editing fiction manuscripts for two decades, with a focus on mysteries. I have written in both the mystery and urban fantasy genres, and I am an author who has been published multiple times. The second of my Mark Mallen novels, Critical Damage (Midnight Ink, 2014), was nominated for a Shamus Award. I also have a background in screenwriting and a certification in copy editing from UCSD.
Services
Proofreading
I will comb over your manuscript page by page, line by line, word by word, to ensure that your work is at its most professional. The worst thing you can do when sending out your manuscript to a prospective agent or publisher is to have any spelling or grammar errors.

Copy editing
There are three levels involved in copy editing: light, medium, and heavy. Light is where I not only check your work for spelling or grammatical errors; I’m also paying attention to syntax and word usage, based on your style of writing and the genre. Medium is everything mentioned above, plus checking for passive voice, continuity issues (if there is a gun on the table in chapter 3, why is it gone in chapter 4?), and ensuring the plot is tight and the characters remain steady throughout the work. Heavy consists of everything already mentioned, plus a deep dive into paragraph structure, flow, and continuity of voice. Think of it like this: light copy edit = macro; heavy copy edit = micro.

Developmental editing
Do you have what you feel is a great idea for a book? An idea that you’ve fleshed out into an outline and then a first draft, but you don’t know where to go from there? As your developmental editor, I will work with you to ensure that we wrest every single ounce of story from your draft. We’ll go over all the alternatives to each item you feel might be an issue, and I’ll share with you my thoughts on what’s working, what could be improved, and what needs to be completely reworked. I will help you make your story as tight and dynamic as possible.

Writing coach
This is where I work with you not only on your current project but also to keep you on schedule, always moving forward towards your goal of finishing your manuscript and getting it out to agents or publishers. Everybody needs a friend, right? Well, due to the insular and solitary work as a writer, writers need a friend more than a lot of people. I’ll be your ear, or the person you can bounce ideas off of for your manuscript. Or when it’s time where you feel you’re ready to start approaching agents, I’ll work with you on your query letter, and we’ll create a plan on which agents to approach first, or what would be the best conference(s) for you to attend, if that’s a path you want to explore. Or maybe you just need someone to email you, asking how your work is going and how you feel about your current pages.

Please note: I will ask for a chapter of your work to edit. I do this to see if my editing style fits your writing and also to see if my editing style fits you. I do not charge for this edit.
For cost inquiries regarding your project, please include a good description of your project, one that includes the genre, page count, and what type of service you're looking for.
